September 5, 2011 – Alpine Loop to Ouray

A rough ride but a good day in the jeep…

Well its a holiday, first one for me a a couple years, at least paid that is…  and we are off in the jeep with the mutt.  He like any excuse to go ANYWHERE.

We headed out of Breckenridge yesterday and headed toward the Alpine Loop, starting in Lake City, camping last night at this little off the road campground.  Turned out pretty cool, because there were some men camping next to the last spot in the camp ground with this huge cabin tent, lots of trucks, trailers, and who knows what else…  they were there from all parts for their annual fishing trip.  Apparently they leave their wives for 3-4 weeks every year and meet up with their buddies and do nothing but fish, and I am sure tell stories…

We pull up and of course they immediately fell in love with Phurba and invited us over for a drink and some cherry cobbler that was cooking in the dutch oven.  How could we resist…  right?  We had a great time with these guys, but I am sure they didn’t need us for that.  We had our cobbler and went to our tent for the night…

Next morning we woke and could smell the coffee and breakfast cooking for our friends from the night before.  We loaded up our tent and were on our way…

Today we are going on the Alpine Loop, from Lake City to Ouray.  We have been on parts of it before from Silverton to Ouray, but were unable to do the Lake City leg of the loop due to snow covered roads that had not had anyone travel on it.

We make it to Ouray with only one minor incident…  the Rocket Box top carrier almost slid off the top of the jeep due to all the bumps along the way.

In Ouray we stop to have a burger at this hole in the wall burger joint… but they were AWESOME!  Took some pictures of some historic street signs for work and some more photos of this strange flying creature.  Thought it was a hummingbird of some sort, but then when you looked closer at it, in the pictures cause the thing wouldn’t sit still long enough to really look at it, it looks like a moth with a nose like a hummingbird.  Anybody has any ideas, I would love to know…

After the photos were taken, and lunch was eaten we loaded back up in the jeep and headed for home.  It was a short trip, but got us out of town and the family together for some time.
